New GWM Ora 5 (2026): Release Date, Specs, and Powertrains Explained

The Arrival of the GWM Ora 5

GWM is making massive waves in the compact SUV market with the highly anticipated GWM Ora 5. Originally known for offering exclusively battery-electric vehicles, the Ora brand is expanding its horizons.

Set for an official launch in July 2026 in South Africa, this new model represents a major strategic shift for the automaker. It is designed to give buyers maximum flexibility, blending everyday practicality with cutting-edge technology.

Why the GWM Ora 5 is a Game Changer

The secret behind the new Ora 5 is GWM’s highly versatile ONE platform. This advanced architecture allows the vehicle to house three completely different propulsion systems.

This means you don’t have to compromise. Whether you are ready to go fully electric or prefer the familiarity of petrol, there is a version built for your lifestyle.

Three Powertrain Options to Choose From

To cater to every type of driver, the GWM Ora 5 will be available in three distinct powertrain variants:

  • Internal Combustion Engine (ICE): A traditional 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine that delivers 105 kW of power and 210 Nm of torque.
  • Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV): A fuel-efficient hybrid combining a 1.5-litre engine with an electric motor, pushing out an impressive 164 kW and 476 Nm of torque.
  • Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV): A fully electric model with a 58.3 kWh battery, providing 150 kW of power and a driving range of up to 430 km.

Retro-Modern Design and Dimensions

The GWM Ora 5 stands out on the road with its unique retro-modern styling, featuring rounded elements and a vibrant palette of exterior colours.

In terms of size, it is a highly practical compact SUV. Measuring 4,471 mm in length and 1,833 mm in width, its dimensions are highly comparable to the popular Toyota Corolla Cross.

Spacious and Connected Interior

Inside the cabin, the Ora 5 focuses heavily on smart connectivity. It features GWM’s latest Coffee OS infotainment platform, providing a seamless and intuitive touchscreen experience.

It is also highly practical for families. The petrol and fully electric models offer a generous 362 litres of boot space, while the hybrid model offers 272 litres due to its battery placement.

Top-Tier Safety Technology

Safety is a massive priority for the GWM Ora 5, making it an excellent choice for daily commuters and families alike. The vehicle is expected to achieve a 5-star safety rating and comes packed with smart features.

Standard safety equipment includes:

  • Seven airbags, including a front centre airbag to protect passengers during side impacts.
  • A 360-degree monitoring camera with a transparent chassis view for easy parking.
  • Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), including adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and blind spot monitoring.

Pricing and Release Date

The GWM Ora 5 is slated to officially hit dealership floors in South Africa in July 2026. Dealerships are already preparing, with some even opening pre-orders for eager buyers.

While exact South African pricing is still under wraps, experts predict it may overlap with the current Ora 03 hatchback, which ranges from R686,950 to R835,950. In overseas markets like New Zealand, the electric models have launched at a highly competitive starting price of $36,990.
